What Is Open Enrollment?
Wisconsin is a “school choice” state. This means you can attend any school of your choosing, regardless of whether you are a resident of the district or not. The Wisconsin Department of Instruction (DPI) requires that anyone living outside of a school district but wishing to attend that district must “open enroll” into the desired district. Open enrollment takes place online, via DPI’s website.
The Open Enrollment window for the 2025-26 school year will begin on Monday, February 3, 2025 and ends on April 30, 2025. A student may choose multiple schools when open enrolling, but a final decision must be made by Sept. 1. Students may decline their open enrollment selection(s) as late as Sept. 1; however, non-district residents can not retroactively open enroll after May 1, 2025.
You can also open enroll by visiting DPI Open Enrollment. The site also offers an abundance of information relating to open enrollment. Specific questions about open enrollment can be directed to the Department of Instruction.
