What makes our library so special?
-
Who we serve!: We are here to provide reading materials for students and staff, from prekindergarten to fourth grade, and all the adults in the building. We have books for leisure reading and informational books for learning and writing reports.
-
Books and materials that celebrate who we are: We have a small collection of books that are in Spanish and Somali for children to share with our Spanish and Somali-speaking parents. We have folktales, and cookbooks with recipes, from all over the world.
-
Storytime sessions: Children in prekindergarten, kindergarten and 1st grade some to the IMC to have a lesson each week that includes a story, an author talk, or learning about the library. Each student gets to check out one book each week, but has to return the book from last week, first. When that book is returned they can check out another book.
-
Flexible scheduling: Although each class in 2nd through 5th grade comes in once a week with the class for a checkout time, the Woodland IMC is open from 8 A. M. until 3:30 P. M. for students and staff to check out books and materials whenever they are needed. Class lessons are scheduled when the students are doing research, writing reports, or having other opportunities for learning with their class.
-
Reading incentive programs: During the year you will hear students talking about Accelerated Reader (1st-4th graders), Battle of the Book (4th graders), Read Across America, and other programs and activities. For Accelerated Readers, students read and pass Accelerated Reader tests to earn points towards their goal. As students meet their goal, their pictures are displayed in the IMC, along with a prize of a new book to take home!
