About
The Barron Area Education Foundation is a nonprofit tax exempt organization committed to supporting the education and leadership activities of the district students. The Foundation also supports areas of education that are not typically funded by the school's operating budget. The Foundation is made up of volunteer Board of Directors independent of the Board of Education, and serves without pay.
History
In January of 1991, three local business leaders formed a committee for the purpose of pursuing their vision of a scholarship foundation for our school district. Leonard Splett, a retired Almena dairyman, Wayne King, from the Barron Electric Coop, and Dr. Milton Krier, Superintendent of Schools, drafted Articles of Incorporation for the proposed foundation. The first formal meeting of the newly formed Foundation was held on February 3, 1992. The Directors and Officers elected were:
President - Robert Peterson, President of Sterling Bank
Vice-President - David Vruwink, Barron High School Teacher
Secretary/Treasurer - Leonard Splett
Fundraising efforts began and by the end of 1993, the new Foundation had gathered over $7,000 in funds. In 1994, the first scholarship was awarded for $300. Cal Romsos was asked to join the Foundation Board as Treasurer in 1994 and served tirelessly until his death in 2007. One of the first fundraising activities was a spaghetti supper at the new high school commons area. We raised a whopping $400. After that, the Foundation organized an annual mailing to past graduates. This continues today as the single largest source of funds.
What started as a single $300 scholarship in 1994 has now grown to 84 scholarships this past year, totaling $144,500.
